How to Register for the ACT: Step-by-Step Guide
Registering for the ACT is straightforward, but there are deadlines, photo requirements, and fee details to keep in mind. Here's a complete walkthrough.
Step 1: Create a MyACT Account
Start by creating a free account at my.act.org/account/create. You'll need:
- Your full legal name (must match your photo ID)
- A valid email address
- Your high school information
- Your date of birth
Your MyACT account is where you'll manage registration, view scores, and send score reports to colleges.
Step 2: Choose a Test Date
The ACT is offered on seven Saturday dates throughout the academic year (September, October, December, February, April, June, and July). Register at least 5–6 weeks in advance to secure your preferred test center and avoid late fees.
Step 3: Select Your Test Center and Format
Choose from available test centers in your area. You'll also select whether you want to test on paper or digitally (where both options are available at your center).
Step 4: Choose Optional Sections
During registration, you can add:
- Science: $4 — recommended for STEM applicants (read our guide)
- Writing: $25 — generally not recommended unless required by your target colleges (read our guide)
You can add or remove optional sections until the late registration deadline.
Step 5: Upload Your Photo
This step is critical. You must upload a clear, current photo of yourself by the photo upload deadline (typically the Monday before the Saturday test date). Requirements:
- Full face and shoulders, plain background
- Current likeness — no old photos
- No filters, emojis, sunglasses, or hats (religious head coverings are permitted)
- Must match the ID you'll bring on test day
Step 6: Pay the Registration Fee
| Item | Fee |
|---|---|
| Core ACT (English, Math, Reading) | $68 |
| Science add-on | $4 |
| Writing add-on | $25 |
| Late registration fee | $40 |
| Test date/center change | $48 |
| Standby testing | $72 |
| Additional score reports (beyond 4 free) | $20 each |
Your registration includes four free score reports. List your college codes during registration or by the Thursday after the test to use them.
On Test Day
Bring the following:
- Printed admission ticket (from your MyACT account)
- Valid, hard-plastic photo ID matching your registration name and uploaded photo
- No. 2 pencils (for paper testing — no mechanical pencils)
- Approved calculator (for Math section)
- Snack and water (for the break — cannot be in the testing room)
Arrive by 7:30 a.m. Doors close once testing begins.
Missed the Deadline?
If you miss the regular deadline, you can register during the late period for an additional $40 fee. If you miss the late deadline, Standby Testing ($72 plus registration fee) is available — but admission is not guaranteed and depends on available seats.
